What it is and how it works
An inert oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsion base used as a vehicle for extemporaneous compounding of topical preparations or as an emollient. It hydrates and softens the stratum corneum and reduces transepidermal water loss.
Indications
Vehicle for compounding dermatological preparations; emollient for dry skin conditions.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin as required, or use as directed in the compounded formulation.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to any component of the base (e.g. preservatives, cetostearyl alcohol, lanolin).
Warnings and precautions
Some bases contain preservatives or emulsifiers that can cause contact sensitisation. Paraffin-containing emollients on dressings and clothing are a fire hazard; avoid naked flames.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; do not freeze.
