What it is and how it works
Acetylcysteine breaks disulphide bonds in mucoproteins, reducing the viscosity of bronchial secretions and aiding expectoration; it is also a glutathione precursor with antioxidant properties. Ascorbic acid is vitamin C, an antioxidant.
Indications
Adjunctive treatment of respiratory conditions with excessive or viscous mucus, such as acute bronchitis and colds with productive cough.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral, as effervescent or dissolved powder; usually 600 mg acetylcysteine daily in single or divided doses in adults.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to acetylcysteine or ascorbic acid; active peptic ulcer.
Warnings and precautions
Use with caution in asthma because of possible bronchospasm and in patients with a history of peptic ulcer. Should not be combined with antitussives that suppress the cough reflex. High-dose vitamin C may increase the risk of oxalate stones and haemolysis in G6PD deficiency.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in a dry place; protect from moisture.
