What it is and how it works

A category of fixed-dose combination products for adults that typically contain an analgesic-antipyretic (paracetamol or an NSAID) together with one or more of an antihistamine, a sympathomimetic decongestant (e.g. phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine), an antitussive or a stimulant such as caffeine. Each component treats a separate symptom of the common cold.

Indications

Short-term symptomatic relief of common cold and influenza symptoms such as fever, aches, nasal congestion, sneezing and rhinorrhoea in adults.

Contraindications

Depend on the components; commonly hypersensitivity, severe hypertension or coronary disease, use with MAO inhibitors and severe hepatic impairment.

Warnings and precautions

Check the composition to avoid duplicate paracetamol or decongestant intake from other products. Sedating antihistamines impair driving; decongestants should be used with caution in hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, glaucoma and prostatic hypertrophy.

Pregnancy

Generally avoided in pregnancy unless advised by a physician.

Storage and supply

Store below 25 °C in a dry place, protected from light.
