Aluminium Hydroxide
Suspension · Oral · 320 mg/5mL · 240 mL
- List code
- 46
- Pharmacologic class
- Antacid; phosphate binder
What it is and how it works
Aluminium hydroxide neutralises gastric acid, raising intragastric pH and reducing pepsin activity. In the gut it also binds dietary phosphate to form insoluble aluminium phosphate, reducing phosphate absorption.
Indications
Symptomatic relief of dyspepsia, heartburn and gastro-oesophageal reflux; hyperphosphataemia (short-term, where other binders are unsuitable).
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral, as antacid usually taken between meals and at bedtime as required; as a phosphate binder, doses are adjusted to serum phosphate and taken with meals.
Contraindications
Hypophosphataemia; porphyria; severe renal impairment for prolonged use.
Warnings and precautions
Causes constipation. Aluminium may accumulate in renal impairment, leading to encephalopathy, osteomalacia and anaemia. Reduces absorption of many drugs (e.g. tetracyclines, quinolones, iron, levothyroxine); separate doses by at least 2 hours.
Pregnancy
Short-term antacid use at usual doses is considered acceptable in pregnancy.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; do not freeze the suspension.
