What it is and how it works

A sterile solution of essential and non-essential L-amino acids that provides a nitrogen source for protein synthesis and tissue repair in patients unable to receive adequate enteral nutrition.

Indications

Source of amino acids as part of parenteral nutrition in adults when oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient or contraindicated.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Dosing is individualised by the nutrition team according to protein requirements, clinical condition and protocol; given by intravenous infusion, usually with energy sources (glucose, lipid), electrolytes, vitamins and trace elements.

Contraindications

Congenital abnormalities of amino acid metabolism; severe hepatic insufficiency or hepatic coma; severe renal insufficiency without access to dialysis; unstable circulatory states such as shock.

Warnings and precautions

Monitor fluid balance, electrolytes, acid-base status, blood glucose, liver and renal function. Infuse at a controlled rate; too rapid infusion may cause nausea, vomiting and flushing. Strict aseptic technique is required, and refeeding syndrome should be anticipated in malnourished patients.

Pregnancy

May be used in pregnancy when parenteral nutrition is clinically required.

Storage and supply

Store below 25 °C, protected from light; do not freeze.
