What it is and how it works

A sterile solution of essential and non-essential L-amino acids with added electrolytes (typically sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphate, chloride and acetate) that supplies nitrogen for protein synthesis together with maintenance electrolyte requirements.

Indications

Source of amino acids and electrolytes as part of parenteral nutrition in adults when oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient or contraindicated.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Dosing is individualised by the nutrition team according to protein and electrolyte requirements and protocol; given by intravenous infusion with appropriate energy sources.

Contraindications

Congenital abnormalities of amino acid metabolism; severe hepatic or renal insufficiency without dialysis; hyperkalaemia, hypernatraemia or other pathologically raised plasma levels of the contained electrolytes; unstable circulatory states.

Warnings and precautions

Monitor serum electrolytes, fluid balance, acid-base status, blood glucose, liver and renal function; adjust additional electrolyte supplementation accordingly. Infuse at a controlled rate using strict aseptic technique, and anticipate refeeding syndrome in malnourished patients.

Pregnancy

May be used in pregnancy when parenteral nutrition is clinically required.
