Pharmacologic class
Parenteral nutrition; multi-chamber bag (amino acids / glucose / lipid emulsion)

What it is and how it works

A ready-to-mix multi-chamber bag in which the separate compartments of amino acids (with or without electrolytes), glucose and lipid emulsion are combined before use to form a complete ‘all-in-one’ admixture providing nitrogen, carbohydrate energy and essential fatty acids.

Indications

Parenteral nutrition for adults (and children per product) when oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient or contraindicated.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Dosing and infusion rate are individualised by the nutrition team according to energy and protein requirements and protocol; given by central or, for low-osmolarity formulations, peripheral intravenous infusion, usually over 12–24 hours.

Contraindications

Severe hyperlipidaemia or disorders of lipid metabolism; hypersensitivity to egg, soya, fish or peanut proteins (depending on lipid source); congenital disorders of amino acid metabolism; severe hepatic insufficiency; uncontrolled hyperglycaemia; shock.

Warnings and precautions

Chambers must be fully activated and mixed before infusion. Monitor blood glucose, triglycerides, electrolytes, fluid balance and liver function; fat overload syndrome and refeeding syndrome may occur. Add vitamins and trace elements as required, check compatibility of additives and use strict aseptic technique.

Pregnancy

May be used in pregnancy when parenteral nutrition is clinically required.

Storage and supply

Store below 25 °C in the overpouch, do not freeze; once mixed use promptly, according to the product's stability data.
