What it is and how it works
Anthocyanosides extracted from bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) are flavonoid glycosides with antioxidant properties that are reported to stabilise capillary walls, reduce capillary fragility and permeability and accelerate regeneration of retinal rhodopsin.
Indications
Traditionally used as adjunctive treatment of capillary fragility, symptoms of venous insufficiency and disorders of night vision or visual fatigue; supporting clinical evidence is limited.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to bilberry extract or excipients.
Warnings and precautions
Generally well tolerated; mild gastrointestinal upset may occur. Use with caution in patients taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs because of possible additive effects on bleeding. Not a substitute for evaluation of visual disturbances.
Pregnancy
Avoid in pregnancy because safety data are insufficient.
