What it is and how it works
A category of rectal ointments and suppositories that typically combine a local anaesthetic (e.g. lidocaine), a corticosteroid (e.g. hydrocortisone), astringents or protectants (e.g. zinc oxide, bismuth salts) and sometimes vasoconstrictors, to relieve pain, itching, inflammation and swelling of haemorrhoids.
Indications
Short-term symptomatic relief of pain, itching, discomfort and inflammation associated with haemorrhoids and pruritus ani.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component; local bacterial, viral or fungal infection for corticosteroid-containing products.
Warnings and precautions
Corticosteroid-containing products should not be used for longer than about 7 days because of skin atrophy. Rectal bleeding, especially in older adults, requires investigation to exclude colorectal disease. Local anaesthetics may cause sensitisation.
Pregnancy
Short-term use of mild preparations is generally acceptable; corticosteroid-containing products only on medical advice.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; suppositories in a cool place to prevent melting.
