Antiscorpion Venom Serum

Injection · Parenteral · 5 mL

List code
1392
Pharmacologic class
Antivenom; equine immunoglobulin fragments (F(ab')2) against scorpion venom

What it is and how it works

Purified equine antibodies, usually F(ab')2 fragments, raised against the venoms of the medically important regional scorpion species. They bind and neutralise circulating venom toxins, preventing and reversing their neurotoxic and cardiovascular effects.

Indications

Treatment of systemic envenoming following stings by scorpion species covered by the antivenom.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Dosing is individualised according to clinical severity and national envenoming protocols; given by intravenous (or per product, intramuscular) injection, with repeat doses if signs persist. Children receive the same dose as adults.

Contraindications

There is no absolute contraindication in life-threatening envenoming; a history of severe reaction to equine serum requires careful risk–benefit assessment.

Warnings and precautions

Acute hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis may occur; administer where adrenaline and resuscitation facilities are immediately available. Serum sickness may develop 5–14 days later. Supportive management of pain and cardiovascular complications remains essential.

Pregnancy

Should be given in pregnancy when systemic envenoming occurs, as benefits outweigh risks.

Storage and supply

Store at 2–8 °C refrigerated; do not freeze; protect from light.
