What it is and how it works
Sterile eye drops containing viscosity-enhancing polymers (e.g. hypromellose, carmellose, polyvinyl alcohol or povidone) that supplement the tear film, lubricate and protect the ocular surface and prolong tear-film break-up time.
Indications
Symptomatic relief of dry eye (tear deficiency, keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and ocular discomfort due to environmental irritation or contact lens wear.
Dosage and administration (summary)
1–2 drops into the affected eye(s) as often as required, commonly three to four times daily or more.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component.
Warnings and precautions
Transient blurring of vision may occur after instillation; do not drive until vision clears. Preservative-containing drops (e.g. benzalkonium chloride) may damage the corneal epithelium with frequent long-term use and may be absorbed by soft contact lenses; preservative-free forms are preferred for frequent use. Persistent eye pain, redness or visual change requires medical review.
Pregnancy
Considered safe for use in pregnancy.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; discard multi-dose bottles 4 weeks after opening (or as stated for preservative-free systems).
