What it is and how it works
Plasma collected by plasmapheresis from donors immunised against rabies, containing high titres of rabies virus-neutralising antibodies. It provides passive antibodies and is used principally as the starting material for fractionation into human rabies immunoglobulin.
Indications
Source plasma for the manufacture of human rabies immunoglobulin, which is used with rabies vaccine for post-exposure prophylaxis after category III exposures.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Use and dosing are determined by the fractionator or specialist according to protocol; clinical post-exposure prophylaxis should use licensed rabies immunoglobulin dosed by body weight.
Warnings and precautions
As a human plasma product it carries risks of allergic reactions and transmission of infectious agents; donor screening and testing are essential. Passive antibodies can interfere with the immune response to rabies vaccine if given in excess.
Storage and supply
Store frozen (typically –25 °C or colder) until fractionation or use.
