What it is and how it works
Boric acid is a weak acid with mild bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties; the alcoholic vehicle acidifies and dries the external ear canal, creating an environment unfavourable to bacterial and fungal growth.
Indications
Mild otitis externa and otomycosis; prevention of swimmer’s ear and drying of the external auditory canal.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Instil a few drops into the affected ear two to three times daily for a short course, as directed.
Contraindications
Perforated tympanic membrane or grommets; application to broken or extensively denuded skin; infants and young children.
Warnings and precautions
Stinging or burning may occur, especially on inflamed skin. Boric acid is toxic if absorbed in significant amounts (nausea, vomiting, erythematous rash, renal damage), so it must not be applied to large areas, wounds or mucous membranes, or swallowed. Discontinue if irritation persists or symptoms worsen.
Pregnancy
Avoid in pregnancy.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in a tightly closed container; flammable — keep away from flames.
