- Phosphate binder (calcium-based)
What it is and how it works
Calcium acetate binds dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract to form insoluble calcium phosphate, which is excreted in the faeces, thereby reducing phosphate absorption and serum phosphate concentration.
Indications
Control of hyperphosphataemia in patients with chronic kidney disease, including those on dialysis.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral: taken with meals; dose individualised according to serum phosphate, typically starting with 1–2 tablets with each meal and adjusted to response.
Contraindications
Hypercalcaemia; hypophosphataemia; conditions associated with hypercalciuria or calcium nephrolithiasis.
Warnings and precautions
Monitor serum calcium and phosphate regularly; hypercalcaemia may occur, particularly with concomitant vitamin D analogues, and vascular calcification risk should be considered. Hypercalcaemia increases the risk of digoxin toxicity. Calcium reduces absorption of tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, levothyroxine and iron if taken at the same time.
Pregnancy
May be used in pregnancy if clinically required, with monitoring of calcium.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from moisture.
