What it is and how it works
Calcium pantothenate is a stable salt of pantothenic acid, a precursor of coenzyme A, which is essential for fatty-acid metabolism, the citric acid cycle and synthesis of acetylcholine, steroids and haem.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of pantothenic acid deficiency, usually as part of vitamin B-complex therapy; dietary deficiency is rare because the vitamin is widely present in food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component.
Warnings and precautions
Generally well tolerated; large doses may cause mild gastrointestinal upset or diarrhoea. Isolated deficiency is uncommon, so the underlying cause of malnutrition should be addressed.
Pregnancy
Nutritional doses are considered safe in pregnancy.
