What it is and how it works

Products in this category typically combine an analgesic–antipyretic (usually paracetamol) with a sympathomimetic decongestant (e.g. pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine) and/or a sedating antihistamine (e.g. chlorphenamine), each acting on a different symptom of the common cold. They treat symptoms only and do not shorten the illness.

Indications

Short-term symptomatic relief of common cold and influenza-like symptoms in children, such as fever, aches, nasal congestion, rhinorrhoea and sneezing.

Contraindications

Children below the minimum age specified on the label (many authorities advise against cough and cold combination products under 6 years); concomitant MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them (for decongestant-containing products); hypersensitivity to components.

Warnings and precautions

Avoid concurrent use of other paracetamol-containing or decongestant products to prevent overdose; dose strictly according to age or weight. Antihistamines may cause drowsiness or paradoxical excitation, and decongestants may cause restlessness, tachycardia and insomnia. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist beyond a few days or high fever develops.

Storage and supply

Store below 25 °C, protected from moisture, out of the reach of children.
