What it is and how it works
A triphasic combined oral contraceptive in which the doses of levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol vary in three phases over the 21-day cycle to approximate physiological hormone fluctuations while keeping the total progestogen dose low. It suppresses ovulation and alters cervical mucus and the endometrium.
Indications
Oral contraception.
Dosage and administration (summary)
One tablet daily in the sequence marked on the pack for 21 days, followed by a 7-day tablet-free interval.
Contraindications
Current or past venous or arterial thromboembolism, thrombophilia, migraine with aura, severe or multiple cardiovascular risk factors (including smoking over 35 years), severe hepatic disease or liver tumours, sex-steroid-dependent malignancy and undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.
Warnings and precautions
Carries the thromboembolic and cardiovascular risks common to combined hormonal contraceptives. Tablets must be taken in the correct order; missed-pill rules are more complex than with monophasic preparations. Efficacy may be reduced by vomiting, diarrhoea and enzyme-inducing drugs.
Pregnancy
Not indicated in pregnancy; discontinue if pregnancy occurs.
