What it is and how it works
Cytisine is a plant alkaloid that acts as a partial agonist at α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. It reduces nicotine craving and withdrawal symptoms while blocking the rewarding effect of nicotine from smoking.
Indications
Aid to smoking cessation and reduction of nicotine craving in adults who are willing to stop smoking.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral 1.5 mg tablets in a 25-day tapering schedule, starting with one tablet every 2 hours (up to 6 tablets daily) on days 1–3 and gradually reducing; the patient should stop smoking by day 5.
Contraindications
Unstable angina, recent myocardial infarction or stroke, clinically significant arrhythmias, and hypersensitivity to cytisine.
Warnings and precautions
Use with caution in ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, phaeochromocytoma, atherosclerosis, renal or hepatic impairment, peptic ulcer, diabetes and psychiatric disorders. Continuing to smoke while taking cytisine may increase adverse effects of nicotine.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
