- Pharmacologic class
- Progestogen-only oral contraceptive
What it is and how it works
Desogestrel 75 micrograms is a progestogen that, unlike older progestogen-only pills, consistently inhibits ovulation. It also increases the viscosity of cervical mucus, impeding sperm penetration.
Indications
Oral contraception, particularly where oestrogens are contraindicated or not tolerated, including during breastfeeding.
Dosage and administration (summary)
75 micrograms orally once daily at about the same time, taken continuously without a tablet-free interval.
Contraindications
Active venous thromboembolic disorder, severe hepatic disease or liver tumours with abnormal liver function, known or suspected sex-steroid-sensitive malignancy, and undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.
Warnings and precautions
Irregular bleeding patterns are common. Breast cancer risk may be slightly increased, as with other hormonal contraceptives; ovarian cysts and depressed mood may occur. Efficacy is reduced by enzyme-inducing drugs and by severe vomiting or diarrhoea.
Pregnancy
Not indicated in pregnancy; may be used during breastfeeding.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in the original package.
