What it is and how it works
Dextromethorphan acts centrally on the medullary cough centre to suppress dry cough; pseudoephedrine is an indirect and direct sympathomimetic that causes vasoconstriction of the nasal mucosa, relieving nasal and sinus congestion.
Indications
Short-term symptomatic relief of dry, non-productive cough accompanied by nasal congestion in colds and upper respiratory tract infections.
Contraindications
Concurrent or recent (within 14 days) MAOI therapy; severe hypertension or coronary artery disease; children below the age limits set by national guidance.
Warnings and precautions
Use with caution in hypertension, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma and renal impairment. Not suitable for productive cough or cough due to asthma. Dextromethorphan may cause serotonin syndrome with serotonergic drugs and has misuse potential.
Pregnancy
Avoid in pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, unless advised by a doctor.
