What it is and how it works
Ferrous glycine sulfate is a complex of ferrous sulfate with glycine that supplies divalent (Fe2+) iron for absorption in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Absorbed iron is incorporated into haemoglobin, myoglobin and iron-containing enzymes and replenishes body iron stores.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral; usually about 100 mg elemental iron once daily, increased to twice daily if required, taken preferably on an empty stomach with water; treatment is continued for about 3 months after haemoglobin normalises to replenish stores.
Contraindications
Iron overload (haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis), iron utilisation disorders (e.g. sideroblastic anaemia, lead anaemia, thalassaemia), anaemias not caused by iron deficiency, and repeated blood transfusions.
Warnings and precautions
Gastrointestinal upset, constipation, diarrhoea and dark stools are common. Absorption is reduced by antacids, calcium, tea, and some foods, and iron reduces absorption of tetracyclines, quinolones, levothyroxine and bisphosphonates, so doses should be separated; accidental overdose is dangerous in children.
Pregnancy
Iron supplementation may be used in pregnancy when indicated for iron deficiency.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from moisture, out of the reach of children.
