- Topical antibacterial; fusidane (steroid-structured) antibiotic
What it is and how it works
Sodium fusidate inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding elongation factor G on the ribosome and preventing translocation. It is highly active against Staphylococcus aureus, including many meticillin-resistant strains, and penetrates intact and damaged skin well.
Indications
Topical treatment of localised superficial skin infections caused by susceptible staphylococci and streptococci, such as impetigo, infected wounds, folliculitis and furunculosis; also eradication of nasal staphylococcal carriage.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Apply to the affected area 3–4 times daily (less frequently if covered with a dressing), for a short course, usually not longer than 7–10 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sodium fusidate or excipients (e.g. lanolin, depending on the formulation).
Warnings and precautions
Prolonged or repeated use encourages the development of fusidic acid-resistant staphylococci, so treatment courses should be short and use restricted to localised infections. Local irritation and hypersensitivity may occur; avoid contact with the eyes.
Pregnancy
Systemic absorption after topical use is minimal; may be used in pregnancy if needed.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; keep the tube tightly closed.
