What it is and how it works
Fusidic acid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding elongation factor G and blocking ribosomal translocation. It is bacteriostatic and, at higher concentrations, bactericidal against Staphylococcus aureus and other Gram-positive organisms.
Indications
Topical treatment of localised superficial skin infections due to susceptible staphylococci and streptococci, such as impetigo, infected cuts and abrasions, folliculitis and secondarily infected dermatoses.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Apply to the affected area 3–4 times daily (less frequently under a dressing), usually for not longer than 7–10 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fusidic acid or excipients.
Warnings and precautions
Prolonged or repeated use increases the risk of staphylococcal resistance, so courses should be short and limited to localised lesions. Local irritation and hypersensitivity reactions may occur; avoid contact with the eyes.
Pregnancy
Systemic absorption after topical use is minimal; may be used in pregnancy if needed.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; keep the tube tightly closed.
