What it is and how it works
Elemental iodine is a broad-spectrum microbicide that oxidises and iodinates microbial proteins, nucleotides and fatty acids, killing bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. Glycerol acts as a viscous, adherent vehicle that prolongs contact with the mucosa or skin and has a mild soothing and hygroscopic effect.
Indications
Mild topical antiseptic application to the mouth, gums and throat (e.g. minor gingival and pharyngeal inflammation) and to minor skin lesions, depending on the product labelling.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to iodine, thyroid disorders (particularly hyperthyroidism or nodular goitre), dermatitis herpetiformis, and use in neonates.
Warnings and precautions
Prolonged or extensive use, especially on mucosa or broken skin, may lead to systemic iodine absorption with effects on thyroid function. It may cause local irritation and staining, and should not be swallowed in large amounts or used with mercury-containing antiseptics.
Pregnancy
Avoid prolonged or extensive use in pregnancy because absorbed iodine may affect fetal thyroid function.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in a tightly closed container, protected from light.
