Pharmacologic class
Haematinic combination (product category): iron with vitamins and other haemopoietic factors

What it is and how it works

Haematinic capsules are combination products supplying the nutrients needed for red cell production, typically ferrous iron for haemoglobin synthesis together with folic acid and vitamin B12 for DNA synthesis in erythroid precursors, often with vitamin C to enhance iron absorption and sometimes other vitamins or minerals; composition varies by product.

Indications

Prevention and treatment of nutritional anaemias, particularly iron-deficiency anaemia with or without associated folate deficiency, and supplementation during periods of increased requirement such as pregnancy.

Contraindications

Iron overload (haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis), anaemias not due to iron or vitamin deficiency (e.g. haemolytic anaemia, thalassaemia, sideroblastic anaemia), repeated blood transfusions, and hypersensitivity to any component.

Warnings and precautions

Folic acid may correct the anaemia of vitamin B12 deficiency while neurological damage progresses, so the cause of megaloblastic anaemia should be established. Gastrointestinal upset, constipation and dark stools are common; iron reduces absorption of tetracyclines, quinolones, levothyroxine and bisphosphonates, and accidental overdose is dangerous in children.

Pregnancy

Iron and folic acid supplementation is commonly used in pregnancy when indicated.

Storage and supply

Store below 25 °C, protected from light and moisture, out of the reach of children.
