What it is and how it works
Homatropine hydrobromide is an antimuscarinic agent that blocks acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors of the iris sphincter and ciliary muscle. This produces pupillary dilatation and paralysis of accommodation, with a shorter action than atropine.
Indications
Cycloplegic refraction and pupil dilatation; treatment of anterior uveitis (iritis, iridocyclitis) to relieve ciliary spasm and prevent posterior synechiae.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Instil 1 drop of a 1–2% solution into the affected eye, repeated as required (e.g. every 3–4 hours for uveitis); apply pressure on the lacrimal sac to reduce systemic absorption.
Contraindications
Angle-closure glaucoma or narrow anterior chamber angle; hypersensitivity to the drug.
Warnings and precautions
May precipitate acute angle-closure glaucoma in predisposed patients. Systemic antimuscarinic effects (tachycardia, flushing, confusion) may occur, especially in children and the elderly. Causes blurred vision and photophobia; patients should not drive until vision has cleared.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from light; discard according to the product's in-use period after opening.
