What it is and how it works
A premixed suspension containing 25% soluble insulin lispro for rapid prandial action and 75% insulin lispro protamine for intermediate-acting basal cover. Insulin lowers blood glucose by stimulating peripheral glucose uptake in muscle and fat and inhibiting hepatic glucose output.
Indications
Diabetes mellitus requiring insulin treatment.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Subcutaneous injection, usually twice daily immediately before (within 15 minutes of) meals; dose individualised according to blood glucose monitoring. Must not be given intravenously.
Contraindications
Hypoglycaemia; hypersensitivity to insulin lispro or excipients.
Warnings and precautions
Hypoglycaemia is the main risk, especially with missed meals, exercise or dose errors. Resuspend by gentle rolling before use; rotate injection sites to avoid lipodystrophy. Hypokalaemia and fluid retention (with pioglitazone) may occur.
Pregnancy
May be used in pregnancy with close glucose monitoring; insulin requirements change across trimesters.
Storage and supply
Unopened: 2–8 °C refrigerated, do not freeze, protect from light; in-use pen may be kept below 30 °C for up to 28 days.
