What it is and how it works

Lidocaine is an amide local anaesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve membranes, preventing pain impulse conduction. Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that disrupts microbial cell membranes, and the gel base provides lubrication.

Indications

Surface anaesthesia and lubrication for urethral catheterisation, cystoscopy and other endoscopic or instrumentation procedures of the urethra and other body cavities.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Instil the contents of a single-use prefilled syringe into the urethra (volume according to product and patient, typically larger for male than female urethra) and wait several minutes for anaesthesia before the procedure.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to amide local anaesthetics or chlorhexidine; severely damaged or bleeding mucosa (risk of rapid systemic absorption).

Warnings and precautions

Systemic absorption through traumatised mucosa can cause lidocaine toxicity (CNS excitation, seizures, arrhythmias); use the lowest effective amount and caution in cardiac conduction disorders, hepatic impairment and epilepsy. Chlorhexidine can cause hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis; avoid contact with eyes and middle ear.

Pregnancy

May be used in pregnancy if required, using the minimum amount.

Storage and supply

Store below 25 °C; single-use — discard any remaining contents.
