Menthol Salicylate

What it is and how it works

Menthol activates cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors, producing a cooling sensation and counter-irritant analgesia. Methyl salicylate is a rubefacient that is partly absorbed through the skin and hydrolysed to salicylate, providing local counter-irritant and mild anti-inflammatory effects.

Indications

Symptomatic relief of minor muscular and joint pain, such as backache, strains, sprains, stiffness and minor arthritic pain.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Apply a thin layer to the affected area and rub in gently, up to 3–4 times daily.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to salicylates (including aspirin) or menthol; application to broken, irritated or inflamed skin, mucous membranes or near the eyes.

Warnings and precautions

Do not use with heating pads or occlusive dressings or immediately after hot baths, as severe skin irritation or burns may occur. Extensive or prolonged use may lead to systemic salicylate absorption and can potentiate warfarin, increasing INR. Keep out of reach of children; methyl salicylate is highly toxic if ingested.

Pregnancy

Avoid extensive or prolonged use in pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, because of the salicylate component.

Storage and supply

Store below 25 °C in a tightly closed container.
