What it is and how it works
Mequinol (4-hydroxyanisole, the monomethyl ether of hydroquinone) is a substrate and competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase in melanocytes. It reduces melanin formation and may be oxidised to cytotoxic quinones that damage melanocytes, producing skin lightening.
Indications
Topical treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders, such as solar lentigines and melasma; higher concentrations have been used for depigmentation of residual normally pigmented skin in extensive vitiligo.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to mequinol or excipients; application to broken or inflamed skin or mucous membranes.
Warnings and precautions
May cause irritation, erythema, burning and irregular or excessive hypopigmentation, including at sites distant from application; depigmentation may be permanent. Treated skin is more sensitive to sunlight; sun avoidance and broad-spectrum sunscreen are required. Avoid contact with the eyes.
Pregnancy
Avoid in pregnancy because safety data are lacking.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from light.
