Molybdenum-99 / Technetium-99m
Injection · Intravenous · 1200 mCi
- List code
- 52129
- Pharmacologic class
- Radiopharmaceutical; radionuclide generator (99Mo/99mTc)
What it is and how it works
The generator contains molybdenum-99 adsorbed on an alumina column, which decays to technetium-99m; elution with sterile sodium chloride 0.9% yields sodium pertechnetate (99mTc) solution. Technetium-99m emits 140 keV gamma photons (half-life about 6 hours) suitable for gamma-camera imaging.
Indications
Source of sodium pertechnetate (99mTc) for radiolabelling of kits for preparation of technetium radiopharmaceuticals, and for direct thyroid, salivary gland, ectopic gastric mucosa (Meckel’s diverticulum), lacrimal duct and blood-pool imaging.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Activity administered is individualised according to the procedure and national diagnostic reference levels, as determined by the nuclear medicine specialist.
Contraindications
No absolute contraindications for diagnostic use other than hypersensitivity; pregnancy should be excluded and imaging justified.
Warnings and precautions
Handle according to radiation protection regulations by trained personnel only. Eluate must be checked for molybdenum-99 breakthrough and aluminium content before use. Radiation exposure should be kept as low as reasonably achievable, particularly in children.
Pregnancy
Pertechnetate crosses the placenta; use only when clearly necessary, and interrupt breast-feeding temporarily after administration.
Storage and supply
Store the generator below 25 °C in its lead shielding in accordance with national radiation protection regulations; use the eluate within the period stated by the manufacturer.
