What it is and how it works
Provides daily maintenance requirements of fat-soluble (A, D, E and, in some products, K) and water-soluble vitamins (B group and C) for patients who cannot meet their needs orally or enterally.
Indications
Vitamin supplementation in adults receiving parenteral nutrition or who are otherwise unable to take vitamins by mouth.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Dosing is individualised: usually one vial daily added to the parenteral nutrition admixture or infusion fluid, according to the product information and the nutrition support team’s protocol.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component (including thiamine or soya/polysorbate excipients) and pre-existing hypervitaminosis.
Warnings and precautions
Anaphylactic reactions, mainly attributed to thiamine, have been reported. Products containing vitamin K may antagonise coumarin anticoagulants; monitor INR. Vitamin A and D toxicity may occur with prolonged use in renal or hepatic impairment; vitamins are degraded by light.
Pregnancy
May be used in pregnancy at recommended maintenance doses when indicated.
Storage and supply
Protect from light; store as specified by the manufacturer (some products require refrigeration at 2–8 °C).
