Nandrolone Decanoate

What it is and how it works

Nandrolone decanoate is a long-acting ester of 19-nortestosterone that binds androgen receptors, with relatively greater anabolic than androgenic activity; it promotes protein synthesis, nitrogen retention and erythropoiesis.

Indications

Anaemia of chronic renal failure and certain aplastic anaemias; adjunct in postmenopausal osteoporosis and catabolic states in some markets.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Deep intramuscular injection, typically every 1–4 weeks, with dose and interval depending on the indication and response; specialist supervision is required.

Contraindications

Known or suspected prostate or male breast carcinoma, pregnancy, and hypercalcaemia or nephrotic syndrome in some labels.

Warnings and precautions

Virilisation in women (voice deepening, hirsutism, clitoromegaly) may be irreversible. Adverse effects on lipids, fluid retention, hepatic dysfunction and suppression of spermatogenesis may occur; monitor in cardiac, renal or hepatic disease and in children (premature epiphyseal closure). Misuse for performance enhancement carries serious health risks.

Pregnancy

Contraindicated because of the risk of virilisation of the female fetus.
