What it is and how it works
Nitrofurazone is a nitrofuran that is reduced by bacterial enzymes to reactive intermediates which damage bacterial DNA and inhibit enzyme systems, giving broad activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
Indications
Adjunctive topical treatment or prevention of bacterial infection in second- and third-degree burns and skin grafts, and in superficial infected skin lesions.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Applied topically to the affected area once daily or every few days, directly or on dressings, according to the nature of the wound.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to nitrofurazone or nitrofurans.
Warnings and precautions
Allergic contact dermatitis and sensitisation are relatively common; discontinue if irritation develops. The polyethylene glycol base may be absorbed from extensive burns and cause renal toxicity in patients with renal impairment. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
Pregnancy
Safety in pregnancy has not been established; use only if clearly needed.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from light and excessive heat.
