What it is and how it works
A balanced mixture of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, trisodium citrate (or bicarbonate) and glucose; glucose-coupled sodium transport in the small intestine promotes absorption of sodium and water even during secretory diarrhoea. WHO low-osmolarity ORS has a total osmolarity of 245 mOsm/L.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of dehydration and electrolyte loss due to acute diarrhoea in children and adults; maintenance of hydration in other conditions with fluid loss.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Each sachet is dissolved in the exact volume of clean (preferably boiled and cooled) water stated on the pack; volume is given according to the degree of dehydration and ongoing losses, generally replacing fluid after each loose stool, per WHO guidance.
Contraindications
Intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus, persistent vomiting preventing oral intake, severe dehydration or shock requiring intravenous therapy, and anuria.
Warnings and precautions
Must be reconstituted with the correct volume of water; incorrect dilution may cause hypernatraemia or reduced efficacy. Caution in renal impairment and in conditions requiring restricted sodium or potassium intake. Reconstituted solution should be discarded after 24 hours (or sooner if not refrigerated).
Pregnancy
Can be used in pregnancy.
Storage and supply
Store sachets below 25–30 °C in a dry place; refrigerate reconstituted solution and use within 24 hours.
