- Pharmacologic class
- Topical sunscreen agent (UVB absorber)
What it is and how it works
Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) absorbs ultraviolet B radiation (approximately 290–320 nm) and binds to the stratum corneum, reducing UVB-induced erythema and sunburn; it provides little protection against UVA.
Indications
Protection of the skin against sunburn caused by UVB radiation; adjunct protection in photosensitivity disorders aggravated by UVB. Its use has largely been replaced by modern broad-spectrum sunscreens, and it is no longer permitted as a UV filter in EU cosmetics.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Apply liberally to exposed skin before sun exposure and reapply after swimming, sweating or towelling.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to PABA or its esters, and history of photosensitivity or contact allergy to related compounds (e.g. benzocaine, procaine, sulfonamides, thiazides, para-phenylenediamine).
Warnings and precautions
Allergic and photoallergic contact dermatitis are relatively common, with cross-sensitivity to other para-amino compounds. It may stain clothing yellow. Does not protect adequately against UVA, so sun-avoidance measures remain necessary.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; flammable if in alcoholic base.
