What it is and how it works

This is a category of fixed-combination syrups for symptomatic relief of colds and flu in children, typically combining an analgesic-antipyretic (e.g. paracetamol) with an antihistamine (e.g. chlorphenamine) and/or a decongestant (e.g. pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine), each acting on a different symptom. They do not treat the underlying viral infection.

Indications

Short-term symptomatic relief of fever, nasal congestion, rhinorrhoea, sneezing and aches associated with common cold and influenza in children.

Contraindications

Varies with the components; generally hypersensitivity, and decongestant- or antihistamine-containing products in young children (many regulators advise against cough and cold combination products in children under 6 years), concurrent MAOI use and severe hepatic impairment for paracetamol-containing products.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of accidental paracetamol overdose if given with other paracetamol-containing medicines; check total daily dose. Sedating antihistamines and decongestants may cause drowsiness, paradoxical excitation, tachycardia or seizures in young children. Use the dosing device provided and for no longer than a few days without medical advice.

Store below 25 °C, protected from light; keep out of the reach of children.
