Phosphate (Organic)
Injection · Parenteral · 216 mg/1mL · 20 mL
- List code
- 14109
- Pharmacologic class
- Parenteral nutrition additive; organic phosphate (e.g. sodium glycerophosphate)
What it is and how it works
Organic phosphate salts such as sodium glycerophosphate are hydrolysed in the body to release inorganic phosphate, which is essential for bone mineralisation, energy metabolism (ATP), cell membranes and acid-base buffering. The organic form is more compatible with calcium in parenteral nutrition admixtures than inorganic phosphates, reducing the risk of precipitation.
Indications
Phosphate supply in adult and paediatric parenteral nutrition; prevention and treatment of hypophosphataemia in patients receiving intravenous nutrition.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Dosing is individualised according to serum phosphate and the nutrition protocol; it is added to the parenteral nutrition admixture or a compatible infusion fluid and must not be given undiluted.
Contraindications
Hyperphosphataemia, severe renal failure, dehydration, hypernatraemia and shock.
Warnings and precautions
Monitor serum phosphate, calcium, sodium and renal function regularly; excessive administration may cause hyperphosphataemia with hypocalcaemia and soft-tissue calcification. Caution in renal impairment. Prepare admixtures aseptically and follow compatibility data.
Pregnancy
Can be used in pregnancy when parenteral phosphate supply is required.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; do not freeze; use immediately after addition to the admixture unless compatibility data allow storage.
