What it is and how it works
Chromic phosphate P 32 is an insoluble colloidal suspension that, when instilled into a body cavity or joint, is phagocytosed and distributed over serosal or synovial surfaces. Phosphorus-32 emits pure beta radiation (mean tissue range a few millimetres, half-life about 14.3 days), delivering local radiation that causes fibrosis and destruction of superficial tumour cells or inflamed synovium.
Indications
Intracavitary (intraperitoneal or intrapleural) treatment of malignant effusions and as adjuvant therapy in selected ovarian cancers; radiosynovectomy in some chronic synovitis and haemophilic arthropathy settings.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Dosing is individualised: activity is determined by the nuclear medicine specialist according to the cavity or joint and protocol. For intracavitary or intra-articular use only; never given intravenously.
Contraindications
Intravenous administration, loculated cavities or evidence of poor distribution, large open wounds or communication with other cavities, and pregnancy.
Warnings and precautions
Correct intracavitary placement must be confirmed before administration, as leakage into the bowel wall or subcutaneous tissue may cause radiation necrosis and fibrosis. Bone marrow suppression may occur. Handle only by trained personnel under radiation protection regulations.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated.
Storage and supply
Store at room temperature in lead shielding in accordance with radiation protection regulations; use within the expiry period stated by the manufacturer.
