What it is and how it works
Macrogols (polyethylene glycol 3350 or 4000) are large, poorly absorbed polymers that retain water in the colon by osmotic action. This increases stool water content and volume, softening stools and promoting bowel movements.
Indications
Short-term and chronic constipation; in higher doses or electrolyte-containing formulations, faecal impaction and bowel cleansing.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Taken orally dissolved in water; for adult constipation typically 10–20 g once daily, adjusted to response.
Contraindications
Intestinal obstruction or perforation, ileus, toxic megacolon, severe inflammatory bowel disease and hypersensitivity to macrogol.
Warnings and precautions
Diarrhoea may cause fluid and electrolyte disturbance, particularly in elderly patients or those with renal or cardiac impairment; discontinue if symptoms of electrolyte imbalance occur. Persistent constipation should be investigated.
Pregnancy
Systemic absorption is negligible and it may be used in pregnancy if required.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in a dry place.
