What it is and how it works
A complex of ferric iron with a low-molecular-weight polysaccharide that supplies elemental iron for haemoglobin synthesis and replenishment of iron stores. It is absorbed from the small intestine and is reported to cause less gastrointestinal irritation than some ferrous salts.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Taken orally; typically 150–300 mg elemental iron daily in one or two doses, adjusted to response and iron status.
Contraindications
Haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis and other iron overload states; anaemias not caused by iron deficiency (e.g. haemolytic anaemia) unless iron deficiency coexists.
Warnings and precautions
Gastrointestinal effects (constipation, nausea, dark stools) may occur. Iron overdose is dangerous, especially in children, so keep out of reach of children; absorption is reduced by antacids, tetracyclines and quinolones and iron reduces their absorption.
Pregnancy
Iron supplementation is commonly used in pregnancy when indicated.

Store below 25 °C in a dry place.
