- Pharmacologic class
- Antifibrotic agent (potassium aminobenzoate)
What it is and how it works
Potassium aminobenzoate (potassium para-aminobenzoate) is thought to increase tissue oxygen uptake and monoamine oxidase activity, which may reduce excessive serotonin-mediated fibrosis; its mechanism is not fully established.
Indications
Peyronie's disease and fibrotic skin disorders such as scleroderma, morphoea and dermatomyositis, although evidence of benefit is limited.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral, usually 12 g daily in 4–6 divided doses with meals, taken with plenty of fluid.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; concomitant sulfonamides (aminobenzoate antagonises their effect).
Warnings and precautions
Gastrointestinal upset and anorexia are common; stop if anorexia or nausea occurs to avoid hypoglycaemia. Use with caution in renal impairment because of the potassium load; hypersensitivity reactions and hepatotoxicity have been reported.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in a dry place.
