Potassium Citrate
Tablet · Oral · 5 mEq
- List code
- 51901
- Pharmacologic class
- Urinary alkalinising agent / potassium supplement
What it is and how it works
Citrate is metabolised to bicarbonate, raising urinary pH and urinary citrate excretion. Increased urinary citrate binds calcium and inhibits calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate crystal formation, while alkalinisation increases the solubility of uric acid and cystine.
Indications
Prevention of calcium oxalate and uric acid kidney stones in hypocitraturia or renal tubular acidosis; urinary alkalinisation; relief of discomfort in mild urinary tract infection (effervescent/powder preparations).
Dosage and administration (summary)
Taken orally with or after meals with plenty of water; dose is adjusted to urinary citrate and pH, commonly 30–60 mmol (mEq) daily in divided doses for stone prevention.
Contraindications
Hyperkalaemia or conditions predisposing to it (severe renal impairment, untreated adrenal insufficiency), active urinary tract infection with urea-splitting organisms, and gastrointestinal obstruction or delayed transit (tablets).
Warnings and precautions
Monitor serum potassium and renal function, especially with potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Gastrointestinal irritation may occur.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in a dry place.
