What it is and how it works
Salbutamol is a short-acting beta2-adrenoceptor agonist that rapidly relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, and beclometasone dipropionate is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation. The fixed combination provides bronchodilatation together with anti-inflammatory treatment.
Indications
Maintenance treatment of chronic asthma in patients requiring regular inhaled corticosteroid and bronchodilator therapy.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Inhalation: usually 2 puffs three to four times daily, adjusted to the response; not to be used as the sole reliever for acute attacks in place of a separate short-acting bronchodilator.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to salbutamol, beclometasone or any excipient.
Warnings and precautions
Increasing use of the bronchodilator indicates deteriorating asthma and requires review. Use with caution in thyrotoxicosis, cardiovascular disease, arrhythmias, hypertension and diabetes; hypokalaemia may occur, especially with high doses. Oral candidiasis and hoarseness may occur; rinse mouth after inhalation.
Pregnancy
May be used in pregnancy when needed to control asthma.
Storage and supply
Store below 30 °C; pressurised canister — protect from frost, direct sunlight and heat; do not puncture.
