What it is and how it works
Selenium sulfide has antifungal activity against Malassezia species and a cytostatic effect that reduces the turnover of epidermal and follicular cells. This reduces scaling and corneocyte production on the scalp and skin.
Indications
Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp; pityriasis (tinea) versicolor.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Shampoo (commonly 2.5%) applied to wet scalp, lathered and left for 2–3 minutes before rinsing, usually twice weekly for 2 weeks then less frequently; for pityriasis versicolor, applied to affected skin and rinsed off after about 10 minutes, repeated as directed.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to selenium sulfide; application to inflamed or broken skin.
Warnings and precautions
Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes; rinse thoroughly. May cause irritation, hair discolouration (especially in light or chemically treated hair) and oiliness or hair loss; remove jewellery before use, as it may discolour metal.
