What it is and how it works
Simple eye ointment is a sterile, paraffin-based ointment (typically liquid paraffin and wool fat in yellow soft paraffin) without an active drug. It forms a protective, lubricating film over the cornea and conjunctiva, reducing friction and evaporation of the tear film.
Indications
Lubrication and protection of the eye in dry eye conditions, particularly at night; protection of the cornea in incomplete eyelid closure (lagophthalmos), and softening of crusts on the eyelid margins.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Applied into the lower conjunctival sac or to the lid margins as required, commonly at night.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component (e.g. wool fat/lanolin).
Warnings and precautions
Causes temporary blurring of vision, so patients should not drive or operate machinery until vision clears; contact lenses should not be worn during use. Avoid touching the tube tip to the eye to prevent contamination.
Pregnancy
Not expected to cause harm in pregnancy as it contains no active drug.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; discard within the period stated by the manufacturer after opening (commonly 28 days).
