Technetium 99mtc Antimony Trisulfide

Injection, Solution · Subcutaneous · 1.5 mg

List code
50200
Pharmacologic class
Diagnostic radiopharmaceutical (99mTc antimony trisulfide colloid); lymphoscintigraphy agent

What it is and how it works

Antimony trisulfide forms very small colloidal particles that, after labelling with technetium-99m and interstitial (subcutaneous or intradermal) injection, are taken up by lymphatic capillaries and retained by macrophages in draining lymph nodes. This allows imaging of lymphatic drainage and intraoperative detection of sentinel nodes with a gamma probe.

Indications

Lymphoscintigraphy, including sentinel lymph node localisation in breast cancer and melanoma, and assessment of lymphoedema.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Activity, volume and injection sites are individualised by the nuclear medicine specialist according to the indication and local protocols.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the kit components; injection into an infected or inflamed area should be avoided.

Warnings and precautions

Not for intravenous use. Radiation exposure should be justified and minimised, and staff dose during surgery should be monitored. Interrupt breast-feeding temporarily.

Pregnancy

Use only when clearly necessary, weighing diagnostic benefit against fetal radiation exposure.

Storage and supply

Store the kit as specified by the manufacturer; use the labelled product within the stated time, in lead shielding.
