What it is and how it works
Technetium-99m ethylenedicysteine is a hydrophilic complex that is rapidly cleared from plasma, mainly by active tubular secretion in the kidneys. Dynamic imaging of its uptake and excretion provides information on renal perfusion, tubular function and urinary drainage, similar to 99mTc-MAG3.
Indications
Dynamic renal scintigraphy (renography) to assess renal function, differential function, obstruction of the urinary tract and renal transplant function.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Activity is individualised by the nuclear medicine specialist, with weight-based adjustment in children, according to local protocols.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the kit components.
Warnings and precautions
Patients should be well hydrated before the study and void frequently afterwards to reduce bladder radiation dose. Radiation exposure should be justified and minimised; interrupt breast-feeding temporarily.
Pregnancy
Use only when clearly necessary, weighing diagnostic benefit against fetal radiation exposure.
Storage and supply
Store the unlabelled kit as specified by the manufacturer; use the labelled preparation within the stated time, in lead shielding.
