What it is and how it works
Technetium-99m succimer (dimercaptosuccinic acid, DMSA) binds to plasma proteins and is taken up and retained by the proximal tubular cells of the renal cortex. Its slow excretion allows high-resolution static imaging of functioning renal cortical tissue and estimation of differential renal function.
Indications
Static renal cortical scintigraphy for detection of renal scarring (e.g. after pyelonephritis), assessment of differential renal function, and evaluation of renal morphology and ectopic kidneys.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Activity is individualised by the nuclear medicine specialist, with weight-based adjustment in children, according to local protocols.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the kit components.
Warnings and precautions
Radiation exposure should be justified and minimised; patients should be well hydrated and void frequently. Breast-feeding should be interrupted temporarily. The labelled preparation is sensitive to oxidation and should be used within the stated time.
Pregnancy
Use only when clearly necessary, weighing diagnostic benefit against fetal radiation exposure.
Storage and supply
Store the unlabelled kit as specified by the manufacturer (typically 2–8 °C or below 25 °C); keep the labelled product in lead shielding and use within the stated time.
