- Topical antibacterial agent (carbanilide), used in medicated soaps
What it is and how it works
Triclocarban is a polychlorinated carbanilide with mainly bacteriostatic activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus; activity against Gram-negative bacteria is limited. It is thought to act by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and inhibiting fatty acid synthesis.
Indications
Antibacterial skin cleansing as a medicated soap, to reduce skin bacteria and body odour and as an adjunct in hygiene of skin prone to minor bacterial infection.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Use as an ordinary soap: lather on wet skin, leave briefly and rinse thoroughly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to triclocarban or other components.
Warnings and precautions
For external use only; avoid contact with eyes and broken or severely inflamed skin. Regulatory authorities (e.g. US FDA for consumer antiseptic washes) have found insufficient evidence that it is more effective than plain soap, and concerns exist about endocrine effects and environmental persistence. Discontinue if irritation occurs.
Storage and supply
Store in a cool, dry place below 25 °C.
